Let’s Get Our Greenville & Spartanburg Homes Ready for This Freeze!
If you live in Greenville or Spartanburg, you already know how this goes. Winter feels totally fine… until it suddenly isn’t.
One minute it’s 55°, the next everyone’s panic-buying milk and bread, group texts are blowing up, and we’re all asking the same question:
“Wait… are my pipes okay?”
And right on cue, a freeze is predicted for the Upstate this weekend, which means it’s probably time to do a little prep, just in case.
As a local mother-daughter real estate team, we’ve seen what happens after these surprise freezes: frozen pipes, HVAC breakdowns, water damage, and repairs that could’ve been avoided with a little prep. So before this freeze hits (or… maybe doesn’t?), here are simple ways to get your Upstate home ready!
☀️ Use the Sun (and Keep the Cold Out)
When the sun’s out, let it work for you. Open curtains on south-facing windows during the day to naturally warm your home, then close them once the sun goes down to keep that heat from escaping.
If your windows feel drafty (very common in older homes), a few temporary fixes can make a noticeable difference:
- Temporary window insulation film
- Heavier or insulated curtains
- Checking window seals for gaps or leaks
🌡️ Thermostat and Heating System Tips
You don’t need to crank the heat to stay comfortable, especially during short cold snaps. Lowering the thermostat slightly when you’re sleeping or away can help save energy, while keeping things comfortable when you’re home (and warm enough for pets).
Before the cold really sets in, it’s also worth making sure your heating system is ready:
- Change HVAC filters
- Make sure vents aren’t blocked
- Schedule service if it’s been a while
From a real estate standpoint, we can tell you firsthand, buyers in the Upstate love seeing homes with well-maintained systems and smart thermostats!
🚰 How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
This is the big one because it’s the most expensive if it goes wrong.
A few easy steps can help prevent frozen pipes:
- Let faucets drip slightly overnight (especially on exterior walls)
- Open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air can circulate
- Pay attention to pipes in garages, laundry rooms, and guest bathrooms
- Disconnect outdoor hoses and cover spigots if possible
We know, letting a faucet drip feels weird. But it’s much better than discovering a burst pipe when everything is closed!
🏠 Don’t Forget Crawl Spaces & Garages
Many homes in Greenville and Spartanburg have crawl spaces, and they’re often overlooked.
If your home has one:
- Close crawl space vents during freezes
- Check that insulation underneath the house is intact
- Make sure vapor barriers aren’t torn or missing
Garages are another problem area. Even attached garages can get cold enough to freeze pipes.
- Keep garage doors closed
- Don’t assume the garage is “warm enough”
- Check ceilings and walls where pipes may run
🚪 Seal Drafts and Air Leaks
Cold air always finds a way in, especially around doors, windows, and plumbing. Those little gaps can turn into frozen pipes fast during overnight freezes.
Take a few minutes to check:
- Door and window frames
- Pipes under sinks
- Cabinets or closets on exterior walls
- Garage doors (especially if the garage is attached)
🔥 Fireplace and Water Heater Tips
We love a cozy fireplace moment, but fireplaces can actually pull warm air out of your home if the damper is left open when you’re not using it. Keep it closed unless there’s a fire going, and seal unused fireplaces if possible. Glass doors or inserts can also improve efficiency.
For water heaters, setting the temperature around 120°F helps:
- Improve efficiency
- Lower energy costs
- Reduce the risk of scalding
⚡ Power Outage Prep
Freezing weather in the Upstate often comes with power outages, especially when ice is involved.
A few easy things to do before the lights flicker:
- Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy (skip candles if you can)
- If you have charging blocks or battery packs, make sure they’re fully charged
- Go ahead and charge phones, laptops, and tablets to 100%
- Save important phone numbers offline in case service is spotty
- Know where your main water shutoff valve is (this one matters if pipes freeze)
- Set your fridge and freezer to a slightly colder setting to help food last longer
- Make sure your garage door can open manually if the power goes out
If the power does go out:
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible
- Unplug sensitive electronics to protect them from power surges when electricity returns
- Open sink cabinets on exterior walls to help prevent pipes from freezing
- Let faucets drip if temperatures are expected to stay below freezing
For heating safely:
Use space heaters with caution, keep them away from water, curtains, furniture, and extension cords
Never use grills, generators, or gas appliances indoors
If you have a generator, make sure it’s fueled and ready before the storm hits
🐾🌿 Don’t Forget Pets and Plants
For pets:
- If it’s cold for you, it’s cold for them, bring pets inside during freezing temps
- Make sure indoor pets have warm bedding and aren’t sleeping near drafty doors or windows
- For pets that go outside briefly, dry them off when they come back in
- Check outdoor water bowls often; they freeze quickly and pets can get dehydrated before you realize it
For plants:
- Bring outdoor plants inside if possible, especially potted plants
- Cover plants that have to stay outside with frost cloths or old sheets (just remove covers during the day if the sun comes out)
- Move plants away from exterior walls and windows once indoors
- Water plants lightly before a freeze, hydrated soil holds warmth better than dry soil

Why Winter Prep Matters in Greenville & Spartanburg 🏡
In places where winter weather is rare, damage tends to be bigger when it happens. Frozen pipes, water damage, and heating failures don’t just cause stress, they usually show up all at once, when everything else is shut down.
Whether you’re planning to stay put for years, thinking about a move, or just trying to get through the weekend without a disaster, a little preparation now can save a lot of frustration later.
And if this helped you, don’t keep it to yourself, share it with a neighbor, a first-time homeowner, or anyone who still thinks frozen pipes only happen up north. When the Upstate freezes, we’re all in it together ❄️🏡
Don’t keep this to yourself—spread the word!
