Tips for Visiting Pumpkin Patches in Greenville and Spartanburg
- Bring bug spray
Cooler weather doesn’t mean the bugs disappear. If you’re planning to wander through a corn maze or hang out for a picnic, toss some bug spray in your bag. - Stay hydrated
You might not feel hot, but walking around fields adds up. We always bring water so nobody ends up cranky halfway through pumpkin picking. - Wear comfy shoes
Pumpkin patches = dirt, grass, and sometimes gravel. Flip-flops sound cute until your feet regret it. Closed-toe shoes or sneakers are your best friend. - Pack a picnic
If you’re making a whole day of it, bring lunch or snacks. - Check the schedule before you go
Many patches have more than just pumpkins like hayrides, corn mazes, festivals, and live music. We always peek at their website or socials so we don’t miss the extra fun. - Look over your pumpkin
Before you commit to “the one,” give it a quick check under the stem. Bugs love hiding there, and it’s better to find out before you bring it home. - Bring a little cash
Not every pumpkin patch takes cards. It’s nice to have some cash handy for snacks, treats, or that extra pumpkin you weren’t planning on (but obviously need).
Pumpkin Picking & Carving Tips
- Pick the right pumpkin
We always look for pumpkins with a sturdy stem and no soft spots. A flat bottom is a win too, it keeps your pumpkin from tipping over when you carve. - Wait to carve
It’s tempting to carve the second you get home, but early carving means a sad, mushy pumpkin before Halloween. Hold off until a few days before, and if you want it to last longer, rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges. - Grab carving tools
A proper pumpkin carving kit makes things way easier (and safer). Those tiny serrated tools are perfect if you’re going for a cool design instead of just the classic triangle face. - Decorate instead
If you don’t feel like carving, paint your pumpkin or add cute decorations. It’s way less messy, just as fun, and keeps your pumpkin looking fresh for longer. - Roast the seeds
Don’t throw those seeds away! Clean them off, toss with olive oil and your favorite seasoning, then bake at 350°F for about 15–20 minutes. It’s SO yummy!
